If you’re coming to Naoshima, you may wanna visit one of the 3 contemporary art museums such as Chichu Art Museum(地中美術館), Benesse House Museum(ベネッセハウス 美術館) and Lee Ufan Museum(李禹煥美術館).
In this article, I’ll show you a couple of ways to get to each museum.
If you know how to get to each museum in advance, you can save some time and explore longer in the museum or go somewhere else on Naoshima.
3 Museums are all located close by.
Luckily, 1.Benesse House Museum, 2.Lee Ufan Museum and 3.Chichu Art Museum are located close by. They are all within a 10 minutes walk from one museum to another.
So if you reach one museum, you can go to another museum very quickly.
There are mainly two ways to go to the three museums.
By bus or by bike? Which do you prefer?
When you come to Naoshima, you usually arrive at the Miyanoura Port. And If you wanna get to the museums from the Miyanoura port, you can go either by bus or bike.
Note: It’s not impossible to walk but it’s simply too far away and too time-wasting if you wanna explore Naoshima efficiently in a day or two.
You can take a taxi but there is only one taxi so chances are slim that you can catch a taxi on the island.
Do you wanna go by bus?
Naoshima operates a town bus between Miyanoura port and Tsutsuji-So(つつじ荘). Click here to jump to the Naoshima Town Bus Time Table.
By bus, you take the red route.
When you arrive at Tsutsuji-so, the last stop, then you can either wait for a free shuttle bus there or walk to each museum.
The free shuttle bus takes you to every museum. Click this link to jump to the free shuttle bus time table.
I’d recommend you to walk because it’s not too far and you’ll walk along a beautiful beach. It’s a swimming beach and you can swim there in the summer.
There are some outdoor art installations such as Yayoi Kusama’s Yellow Pumpkin along the way. The view and the sea breeze are just wonderful.
It takes about 15 -20 minutes to Benesse House Museum and another 10 minutes to the rest of the museums.
Note: If you are staying at the Benesse House Hotel, there is a shuttle bus for you at Miyanoura port straight to the Benesse House Museum.
Do you wanna go by bike?
If you wanna go by bike, there are at least 5 rental bike shops near Miyanoura Port. You can check my post on how to rent a bike in Naoshima here.
The yellow route in the map above is the shortest way.
But you can take the red bus route by bike to Tsutsuji-So(つつじ荘), and get off there because you’re not allowed to ride a bike in the Benesse Art site area.
Then walk along the beautiful Gotanji beach, enjoying the ocean and outdoor art installations.
Here are the details of each museum.
