In this article, I’m going to talk about top 5 Hiroshima Style Okonomoyaki restaurants in Hiroshima or Miyajima that I’ve personally been to.
Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki is the soul food of the local people in Hiroshima.
If you’re planning to come to Hiroshima, you’d definitely have to try Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki at least once while you are in Hiroshima.
Listed are only the restaurants I’ve personally been to. I’ve been to more than 10 restaurants, and I picked up 5 restaurants that are definitely worth visiting.
What’s Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki?
For those who have never heard of Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki, let me explain what Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki is.
There are two major types of Okonomiyaki: Osaka Style Okonomiyaki and Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki.
In Hiroshima, okonomiyaki is an ultra-thin layered savory pancake with fried noodle and lots of veggies inside while, in Osaka, okonomiyaki is a savory pancake without the fried noodle.
In Hiroshima Style, layer a thin pancake-like batter at the bottom, lots of shredded cabbage, bean sprouts, seafood and fried noodles in the middle.
Flip all of these ingredients on a fried egg on an iron hotplate and finish it by spreading savory sweet okonomiyaki sauce on top of the batter.
You can add toppings like chopped spring onions or oysters, shrimps or pretty much anything you like.
You consume more veggies and less flour in the Hiroshima Style. With the Osaka Style, you have less veggie and more flour.
Which is better? Hiroshima or Osaka?
I grew up in Osaka and Kyoto, eating the Osaka style Okonomiyaki regularly. But now, I prefer Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki because it comes with more veggies and less flour.
Which style do you prefer ? And why?
Good News for Vegetarians!
As Hiroshima is getting more and more international, some restaurants have vegetarian options. I’ve heard some restaurants have even vegan options too.
Even if you are vegetarian, you can enjoy the soul food of Hiroshima!
Let me start introducing some of my favorite Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki Restaurants in Hiroshima or on Miyajima.
I’m addicted to the okonomiyaki of Goe-Mon. Every time I arrive at JR Hiroshima Station, the first thing I do is to head to this Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki restaurant at JR Hiroshima Station on the 2nd floor.
There are several Okonomiyaki restaurants on the same floor.
But, if you look at the number of customers in the restaurant and the line in front of the restaurant, it’s quite obvious this restaurant must be the best among the others.
Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima is like a show!
At okonomiyaki restaurants in Hiroshima, it’s very fun to see chefs making a round shape batter, mixing up all the veggies and flipping everything altogether. It’s almost like a cooking show. I see lots of foreign tourists taking videos of how chefs are making Okonomiyaki.
Okonomiyaki with squid chips and a mountain of chopped spring onions
I usually add a bunch of chopped spring onions(Negi Ohmori) because I like the flavor of springs onions.
Do they have an English menu?
Phew, they have an English menu.
I ordered Nr.6 and it came with squid chips, shiso leaves, a bunch of chopped spring onions and fried egg.
It usually comes with slices of pork belly but I asked them to leave them out because I don’t eat meat.
Address: 〒732-0822 広島県広島市南区松原町２−３７−ASSE２F
How to get there: It’s in a department store called Asse right at JR Hiroshima station. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of the department store.
Price: 1000yen – 2000 yen.
Note: If you go there in the lunchtime, you might have to wait in a queue because the restaurant is in the business area and a lot of businessmen flock to this restaurant.
2, Daruma-no-Hassho Miyajima Ten（だるまの八昌宮島店）
Miyajima is famous for its world cultural heritage sites: Itsukushima Shrine and Great Torii Gate.
It’s a remote island 10 minutes away by ferry from the mainland, Honshu. This restaurant is located on the island and on the back of the Itsukushima Shrine near the exit.
Daruma-no-Hassho Miyajima Ten is a branch of “Hassho” that is one of the most popular Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki restaurants in Japan.
Inside the “Hassho”
I like sitting right in front of the iron plate because you can see the chefs making Okonomiyaki very skillfully using a metal spatula called Hera.
Plain okonomiyaki with a bunch of chopped spring onions!
I always go for the same option wherever I go. The plain okonomiyaki without meat, but with a bunch of chopped spring onions on top. Sometimes I add shrimps or squids if I like.
Hassho Miyajima Ten is Friendly for vegetarians or Vegans 😉
I asked the chef at this restaurant if they can make vegetarian or vegan options. They say they can adapt to both options, so here, you can savor the soul food of Hiroshima!
Even if you are vegetarian or vegan, you don’t need to feel “left out” at this restaurant.
Just tell them that you are vegetarian or vegan when you come to this restaurant. They can make a vegan or vegetarian Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki for you.
Miyajima is famous for oysters, so you can add fresh oysters as toppings to your Okonomiyaki if you like oysters.
Unfortunately, I’m allergic to seashells, so I haven’t tried it. If you love Oysters, I’d recommend you to try Okonomiyaki with oysters as a topping.
There are limitless Okonomiyaki options if you add toppings on top of the batter.
How about the Great Torii Gate night cruise after dinner?
Most of the restaurants on Miyajima close very early. But this restaurant is open until 8:30 pm, with last order closing at 8:00 pm.
The restaurant is behind the Itsukushima Shrine. If you have dinner at this restaurant at night, you can go to see the Torii Gate being lit up and floating on the water after dinner.
How to get there: It’s right behind the Itsukushima Shrine. It’s about a 5- minute walk from the exit of the Itsukushima Shrine. If you walk up the river next to the exit in the direction of the mountain, it’s very close.
Price range: 1000yen – 2000 yen. If you add oysters, it’ll be around 3000yen.
Note: Most of the restaurants on the island close around 6-7PM. So it’s very difficult to find a restaurant open until 8 pm like.
After 6 pm, lots of tourists leave the island and the restaurant isn’t so crowded. It would be advisable to come to this restaurant after 6 or 7 pm if you are staying over on the island.
Kishibe is one of the very rare restaurants that are open until 9:00 pm on Miyajima. Most of the restaurants or shops close before 6:00 pm as tourists leave the island very early.
If you are staying in a hotel on the island and you want to eat okonomiyaki, but you don’t know where to have Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki, Kishibe is a very good option.
Kishibe is located on a beautiful back street
Kishibe is located on Machiya Dori（町家通り） which is one street behind the main shopping street on Miyajima.
So, there are less customers and you don’t need to wait as long as in the restaurants on the main shopping street.
When I went to Kishibe, I didn’t have to wait at all.
Okonomiyaki at Kishibe
To be honest with you, Okonomiyaki restaurants on Miyajima aren’t as good as ones in the Hiroshima city center. Maybe because there is much less competition… or due to the logistic as it’s a remote island.
But Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki at Kishibe was good old fashioned in a traditional style of Hiroshima, or it had some kind of nostalgic taste to it.
They also serve ramen and other grilled meals.
Vegetarian Okonomiyaki at Kishibe
There was a Spanish family; a mom, grandma and a daughter when I was in the restaurant. The daughter was vegetarian. She tried to order a vegetarian Okonomiyaki in English but the communication didn’t seem to go well between the vegetarian daughter and the grandma owner.
I helped them to communicate each other and the daughter got her vegetation version of Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki at the end.
So that means, even if you are a vegetarian, you can enjoy Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki here at Kishibe. Unfortunately, vegan option would be difficult here, I guess.
This is the main counter table at Kishibe
Kishibe is very homey and it seems to be a restaurant for locals living on the island or it feels as if your grand-ma was cooking Hiroshima style okonomiyaki for a grandson.
It’s actually run by two ladies, apparently a grandma and her daughter.
There is only one round table at the corner, but other than that, there is a only main long counter table where the grandma is making okonomiyaki.
You’d usually sit at the main counter table with other people.
If you are ok with other customers sitting next/close to you on the same table, this would be a very nice place to get to know locals or other tourists.
Address: 〒739-0588 広島県廿日市市宮島町桜町483−２
How to get there: It’s one street behind the Main Street, Kiyomori Dori. It’s on a street called Machiya Dori（町家通り）where there are lots of Japanese old town houses.
Price range: 650yen – 2000 yen. I have to say it’s a reasonable restaurant for Miyajima, one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world.
This article is not finished yet, I will add 2 more Okonomiyaki restaurants in Hiroshima or on Miyajima over time if I find restaurants worth visiting.
If you have your favorite Okonomiyaki restaurant and do think it’s better than ones listed on this article, please drop me a line!
NAGATA-YA is located in the city center and 5 minute-walk from Atom Bomb Home in Hiroshima.
NAGATA-YA has been featured in the travel magazine of Air France or Japan airline. It’s a busy and vibrant restaurant full of international customers.
The staff is very friedly and some speak English fluently. So even if you speak no Japanese, it wouldn’t be an issue at NAGATA-YA.
The English menu & vegetarian Okonomiyaki at NAGATA-YA
Not only do they have an English menu, but also they have some vegetarian Okonomyaki too.So if you are a vegetarian, you can eat a high-quality Okonomiyaki here at NAGATA-YA.
Eating directly from the iron plate at NAGATA-YA
There are individual tables and a long countable. The best thing at this restaurant is you have your own iron plate in front of you.
So, you can eat your okonomiyaki directly from iron plate, which means you can keep your Okonomiyaki hot whilst you are eating.
I’d love you to experience the culture of “eating with heat”.If okonomiyaki is hot, it makes it twice as delicious.
You can also use your own spatula and cut your okonomiyaki into the size you want.
When’s the best time to visit NAGATA-YA?
NAGATA-YA is a very popular and busy restaurant.
If you go there during lunch or dinner time, you may have to wait for 15- 30 minutes according to people who visited the restaurant.
But I went there at around 3pm, so I didn’t have to wait at all. It would be a good idea to avoid busy time like lunch or dinner time, say between 3pm and 4pm or so.
But I have to say your wait will be definitely worth it. Once you get your seat, the staff won’t rush you.
Special Okonomiyaki at NAGATA-YA I ordered
I ordered a “Special Okonomiyaki” on the menu. Special Okonomiyaki comes with sliced pork, squid, squid chips, shiso leaves, chopped spring onions, egg, and you can choose either fried noodle or fried udon noodle.
I don’t eat meat, so I asked them to leave out the sliced pork. And I ordered an extra bunch of spring onions as always.
In some of the Hiroshima style okonomiyaki restaurants, your okonomiyaki are already cut into several pieces and come on a plate.
But in NAGATA-YA, you can cut it the way you want and eat your okonomiyaki hot. I love a restaurant letting you “Eat with heat”.
I’d love you to try “eating with heat”. This is a very important culture of eating okonomiyaki in Hiroshima or Osaka.
Some people obviously don’t like to eat hot though…

5, Micchan（みっちゃん総本店）JR Hiroshima Station
Founded in 1950 by Isao Ise, Micchan is the first restaurant that started to make a Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki in 1955 in the similar shape and style you see now in Hiroshima.
The easiest access among the five restaurants
There are more than 5 branches in Hiroshima alone, and Micchan JR Hiroshima Station is located in the building of JR Hiroshima Station.
So, it’s very convenient to visit this restaurant before or after sightseeing in Hiroshima or Miyajima.
Not only do they serve the original Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki. But also they have a wide selection of okonomiyaki including Vegetarian Okonomiyaki.
Okonomiyaki at Micchan
Micchan uses a special raw noodle to give it a crispy texture when frying it on iron plate. The crispy noodle goes well with the special sweet and savory Okonomiyaki sauce a.k.a Micchan sauce.
The interior of the restaurant is very modern and slick as a okonomiyaki restaurant.
Want a vegetarian okonomiyaki ?
They don’t have a vegetarian okonomiyaki on their menu. But if you ask for a vegetation okonomiyaki, they can do it.
When asking for a vegetarian okonomiyaki, make sure you ask them to use plant based oil when cooking the okonomiyaki, not Lard(pig’s fat).
Price range: 800 yen – 1500 yen
Opening hours: 11:00am – 9:30pm Open everyday.
To sum up, this article is not finished yet, I will update this article over time if I find a new restaurant worth visiting.
